The Benefits of a Lactose
Free Protein Shake

When you see the phrase lactose-free, what comes to mind?

A) “That’s my life in a nutshell! I’m lactose intolerant.”

B) “I’ve heard the term before … I just don’t know what it means.”

C)   “I’ve thought about going the lactose-free route, but I like dairy WAY too much!”

For those of you in the “A” camp, we have a lactose-free, high-protein shake that may meet your dietary needs and support your fitness goals. It will be easy on your digestive system and can help you get the lean, fit body you crave. More on that in a bit …

For our “B” friends out there, you’re not alone! The term can be confusing. Many people often assume that lactose-free is the same as dairy-free, when in fact they’re two separate things. We’ll break it down for you …

Lactose is a naturally occurring sugar found in dairy products. However, it’s only one component of dairy products. Some dairy products are actually lactose-free. Furthermore, lactose can be found in a wide range of other products aside from milk – like baked goods, sauces, non-dairy creamers, margarine, and a variety of processed foods.

If a person is lactose intolerant, it means their body cannot properly digest lactose. It doesn’t mean they can’t have dairy – they just can’t have dairy that contains lactose.

With us so far?

Now for our “C” group. As mentioned, the terms lactose and dairy aren’t interchangeable. So, go ahead and shop for lactose-free foods in the dairy aisle!

Why ChooseLactose Free?

If you’re lactose intolerant, eating lactose-free foods isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s something you need to do to improve how your body feels and functions. Because your body produces too little of an enzyme known as lactase, it reacts poorly whenever you consume foods or drinks containing lactose. These symptoms aren’t pretty: bloating, flatulence, cramps, diarrhea, and nausea to name a few. Don’t be embarrassed, because research shows you’re one of about 30 to 50 million Americans who are lactose intolerant.* Typically, this condition is genetically related or caused by a gastrointestinal (GI) issue.

What If You’re Not Lactose Intolerant?

You can still proactively reduce the amount of lactose in your diet. After all, many people are actively going the “free-from” route by choice. They’re looking for simpler and fewer ingredients in their foods, drinks, and supplements. Even though removing lactose might not have been on your radar before, it could be something to consider now.

Think about it for a second. Do you find that some foods leave your stomach feeling more bloated or upset than others? Does this typically happen when you consume foods containing lactose?

While you might not be diagnosed with lactose intolerance, you may have an aversion or sensitivity to it. Choosing lactose-free options may help your digestive system run a little smoother, leaving you feeling “lighter” and less sluggish than usual. Give it a try and see how you feel. Of course, if you’re making any dramatic changes to your diet, be sure to speak with your family doctor or a certified nutritionist.
